Stéphane Mallarmé,  Un coup de dés jamais n'abolira le hasard (A Throw of the Dice Never Will Abolish Chance), with eleven lithographs by Ellsworth Kelly was published by The Limited Editions Club, New York, in 1992.

Ellsworth Kelly, the celebrated American artist known for his minimalist and abstract works, crossed paths with the famed Limited Editions Club of New York in a collaboration that intertwined visual art with literature.
Kelly's association with the Limited Editions Club led to the creation of a unique and visually striking edition of Mallarmé's poem "Un coup de dés jamais n'abolira le hasard" ("A Throw of the Dice Will Never Abolish Chance"). This poem, known for its innovative typography and layout, inspired Kelly to create lithographs that visually interpreted Mallarmé's avant-garde work.

'Mallarmé’s enigmatic poem gains much of its power from its appearance: the seemingly arbitrary but actually purposeful way in which he has arranged the poem to appear on the page.

The book is presented in the original French. Ellsworth Kelly has created eleven lithographs to accompany the text. While Kelly’s flat, monochromatic panels appear to be purely abstract, each draws on specific details observed by the artist, and each challenges the viewer’s perception and perceptiveness'

(...)

'The typeface-a Monotype version of Bodoni-has been set by hand with the special care needed to observe Mallarmé s precise placement of every word" (Publisher). The text is printed by Daniel Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress on Velin BFK Rives paper, and the Kelly lithographs printed by Bruce Porter of Trestle Editions'.[2]

The Limited Editions Club

The Limited Editions Club, based in New York, was a treasure trove for book lovers. Established in 1929 by George Macy, it was dedicated to producing finely crafted, limited edition books cherished for their exceptional quality and artistic design. Each publication was a testament to the marriage of literature and visual artistry, featuring renowned illustrators and designers collaborating to create exquisite editions.

The club's focus was on creating exclusive editions of classic works, ensuring meticulous attention to detail in every aspect, from paper quality to binding and illustration. These editions often featured hand-numbered copies signed by the illustrator, making them coveted collector's items.

Throughout its history, The Limited Editions Club collaborated with esteemed artists such as Picasso, Matisse, and Rockwell Kent, among others, elevating the reading experience to a form of art appreciation. Despite ceasing its regular operations in the 1980s, its legacy endures, with its editions remaining prized possessions for bibliophiles and a testament to the marriage of literature and fine craftsmanship.
